Last year, the Quick Center for the Arts took artistic and intellectual risks with “Global Theatre: A Performance Series,” a new live theater series that combined artistry, intellect and innovation. Curated by Dr. Martha S. LoMonaco and titled It’s A Woman’s World, the series consisted of three performance pieces celebrating American women who dare to make art “outside the box” by co-opting traditional male turf. The series opened with a 1909 play, A Man’s World by Rachel Crothers, performed by Theatre Fairfield, the resident production company at Fairfield University.
Two other pieces in the series were INCARNATIONS, a performance collaboration between Emily Coates, a dancer, and Sarah Demers, a physicist, which explored the intersections between kinesthetic imagination and scientific ideas, and Four Women, created by DJ Reborn and fellow female hip-hop DJs, which paid homage to Nina Simone’s powerful song, “Four Women” of the 1960s.
