Fairfield applauded some of its finest professors this year, honoring Dr. Sheila C. Grossman, professor of nursing, and Dr. Sonya Huber, associate professor of English, as Alpha Sigma Nu’s Teachers of the Year. In addition, the Charles F. Dolan School of Business awarded its 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award to Dr. Michael P. Coyne, associate professor of accounting, and gave the Outstanding Research Paper Award to Dr. Debra Strauss, associate professor of business law.

Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society, presented its award to recognize scholarship, loyalty, and service to the ideals of Jesuit higher education. Dr. Huber is the author of Cover Me: A Health Insurance Memoir (2010), a finalist for the ForeWord Book of the Year, and Opa Nobody (2008), which was shortlisted for the Saroyan Prize. Dr. Grossman, the coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner track, is an award-winning author of textbooks, including The New Leadership Challenge: Creating a Preferred Future for Nursing.

Dr. Coyne was praised for his commitment to his students and breadth of knowledge. “He is approachable, likable, knowledgeable, and qualified,” wrote one of the students who nominated him. Many noted his commitment to faith.

Dr. Strauss won for her article “An Analysis of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act: Protection for Consumers and Boon for Business.” The faculty committee picked the paper because it sets forth a case for proactive policy on global food security, among other things.
