Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Top Rated Denver – The men’s lacrosse team defeated top-ranked University of Denver on the road in April, the first-ever win over a number-one team in program history. Sam Snow scored the winning goal in overtime for a 10-9 victory. The Stags were ranked nationally during the 2013 season, reaching as high as 13th in the polls.

Steve Burak ’15 became the first Fairfield University individual golfer to qualify for the NCAA tournament when he won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament individual title. The junior won the MAAC championship with a tournament record score of 208, becoming the first Stag to win the MAAC individual title since 1997. He competed in the NCAA regional located in Baton Rouge, La. He finished the three-round tournament with a score of 232, which placed him 48th out of 75 participants.

The women’s volleyball team captured the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament championship and received a bid to the NCAA tournament. Fairfield defeated Siena College to win the MAAC title,coming back from a two-setdeficit to win the match 3-2.

The field hockey team received its first-ever nationalranking when it was rated 23rd in the nation by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Stags went on to earn a bid to the America East tournament, the first time that the Stags played in the postseason tournament.

The men’s and women’s basketball team advanced to postseason play following the 2012-13 regular season. The men’s team traveled to Kent State for the first round of the Postseason Tournament, the fourth straight season that the team qualified for postseason play. The women’s team reached the quarterfinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational, its third postseason berth in four years.

Danielle Russo ’14 was one of three female student-athletes honored with an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Community Awareness Award given for distinguished service. Russo was honored for donating bone marrow during Hurricane Sandy and being an active member of Best Buddies. She was instrumental in the team’s two-year relationship with a 10-year-old girl who suffered with an illness before passing away earlier this year.

Fairfield University had 154 student-athletes named to the 2012-13 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll. Five programs — men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s swimming & diving, and volleyball – earned APR Recognition Awards from the NCAA. In addition, 67 percent of Fairfield student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring 2013 semester.
